The River Oaks Theatre's Second October Looks Less Like a Multiplex and More Like a Film Society

The River Oaks Theatre's Second October Looks Less Like a Multiplex and More Like a Film Society

When did you last check the River Oaks Theatre calendar by date rather than by title? In the first two weeks of October 2026, one new film plays almost every day. Nearly everything else on the schedule plays once and is gone. The 1939 building on West Gray now operates like a repertory house with a kitchen, and the calendar shows it.

One Film Runs All Week. Almost Everything Else Plays Once.

DIGGER is the only title with a conventional run. It plays October 1 through 8, with 27 showtimes across those eight days. They run from a 10:15 a.m. Sunday show to a 10:45 p.m. Wednesday show. HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY!, a film about ballroom dancers in Tokyo, gets six afternoon and late-morning showings over the same week.

Around those two films, the schedule fills with single screenings. Most of them belong to a horror program the theatre calls Nightmare Fuel. The site applies that label to individual screenings but doesn't describe it as a formal series with a set cadence.

Date Time Program
Thu., Oct. 1 10:15 PM Nightmare Fuel: AKIRA
Fri., Oct. 2 10:00 PM Nightmare Fuel: SISTERS (1972)
Sat., Oct. 3 10:30 AM Nightmare Fuel: HOCUS POCUS
Sat., Oct. 3 6:00 PM THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC with live metal score by The Silent Light
Sat., Oct. 3 10:15 PM Nightmare Fuel: THE BROOD
Sun., Oct. 4 12:45 PM 25 CATS FROM QATAR with director Q&A
Sun., Oct. 4 6:00 PM A PAGE OF MADNESS with live metal score by The Silent Light
Mon., Oct. 5 8:00 PM MACDEATH – A Drag Show
Fri., Oct. 9 10:00 PM Nightmare Fuel: BEGOTTEN
Sat., Oct. 10 11:15 AM Nightmare Fuel: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (Director's Cut), presented by Buchanan's Native Plants
Sat., Oct. 10 9:45 PM Nightmare Fuel: FREAKS
Tue., Oct. 13 10:00 PM Nightmare Fuel: BEGOTTEN

That's a dozen scheduled events in thirteen days. Only BEGOTTEN plays twice. The table only goes through mid-month because the theatre's Coming Soon listings were only partly captured. Late October may add more titles under the same Nightmare Fuel label.

Most of these screenings are one-night events, so a free evening next week won't bring a second chance. A Saturday-morning HOCUS POCUS, the 1972 SISTERS, and a 1926 Japanese silent film each get a single showing. Late shows are the norm. Six of the Nightmare Fuel screenings start at 9:45 p.m. or later.

Saturday, October 3, Two Years On

The theatre reopened on October 3, 2024, after a multi-year renovation. Two years later, that date falls on a Saturday. The current Live Events list shows no separately branded anniversary celebration. What it shows is a full day of programming from morning to late night.

The day starts with HOCUS POCUS at 10:30 a.m. At 6:00 p.m., Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 silent film THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC plays with a live metal score performed by The Silent Light. David Cronenberg's THE BROOD closes the night at 10:15 p.m.

The Silent Light stays for a second night. On Sunday, October 4, at 6:00 p.m., the group performs its live score for Teinosuke Kinugasa's A PAGE OF MADNESS, a 1926 silent horror film. Michael Formanski founded the project in 2015. It plays with drummer Matt Hardy and a rotating group of musicians, and it writes heavy-metal scores for silent films. A 2025 profile from Roger Williams University says Formanski is from North Branford, Connecticut, and that the group tours nationally.

Earlier that Sunday, at 12:45 p.m., director Mye Hoang presents 25 CATS FROM QATAR in person and takes questions after the screening. On Monday at 8:00 p.m., MACDEATH, a haunted drag show, takes over the main room. The listing doesn't name the performers.

The Main Room Was Rebuilt for Live Shows

A metal band in front of a silent film and a drag show on a Monday both depend on how the building was rebuilt. The renovation gave the main auditorium a retractable screen and a stage, so the room can host live performances as well as films. Houstonia put the main room at 237 seats. Houston Public Media described it as holding nearly 250, with two smaller auditoriums upstairs that seat 50 each. A separate Screening Lounge handles special screenings and private rentals.

The rebuild also restored the neon marquee. It upgraded projection and sound, added larger seats with swivel tables, and built a kitchen and two bars. Food and drinks come to your seat, and each seat has its own table. Beer, wine, and cocktails are available, along with a lobby bar.

The renovation followed a long gap. Pettigrew & Worley designed the theatre, which opened in 1939. Landmark Theatres ran it from 1976 until closing night on March 25, 2021, when lease talks with the landlord, Weingarten Realty, broke down. Friends of River Oaks Theatre answered with protests, screenings, and fundraisers. A variety show on March 27, 2021, raised nearly $10,000. Kimco Realty acquired Weingarten and the shopping center in August 2021. In 2022, Kimco signed a lease with Star Cinema Grill under a plan to keep the theatre an arthouse venue. The Friends group later became Arthouse Houston and kept partnering with the reopened theatre on programming.

A Calendar Built by a Programmer

The one-night format follows from how the job was defined. Robert Saucedo was named artistic director before the 2024 reopening. His role covers daily film and event programming, including repertory, independent, and international film, live events, and filmmaker appearances.

The calendar has followed that approach since the doors reopened. Tape Worms, a monthly series of mystery VHS screenings, began in October 2024. Houstonia reported in 2025 that its shows almost always sell out. Saucedo introduces each tape and asks the audience to engage with it as art rather than as a so-bad-it's-good curiosity. In August 2026, he hosted werewolf-movie screenings at the theatre to mark the release of his graphic novel, Curse of the Where Wolf. On September 25, the drag performer Nymphia Wind appeared at the theatre before a screening of Eat Drink Man Woman, in a visit organized by Taiwan Academy.

Taken together, the last three months repeat a pattern. A guest, a live score, a host's introduction, or a local co-presenter turns a screening into an event that happens once. Buchanan's Native Plants presenting LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS on a Saturday morning fits the same model.

For anyone planning an October evening there, a few details from the theatre's own pages help:

  1. The individual event pages list showtimes and links to buy tickets but no prices, so check the cost at checkout.
  2. Late-night Nightmare Fuel screenings cluster on Fridays and Saturdays, with one Tuesday BEGOTTEN on October 13.
  3. Groups wanting a private screening can book the Screening Lounge separately.

Around the Marquee on West Gray

The River Oaks Shopping Center around the theatre keeps changing. Honest Mary's opened its first Houston location at 2047-A W. Gray on December 4, 2025, in the former La Madeleine space. The center now lists Goode Co.'s Bar Buena mezcal bar and Maison Chinoise as open. Maison Chinoise sits at 1958 W. Gray, on the ground floor of the Driscoll River Oaks tower. A state filing reported in July 2026 showed Lilly Pulitzer planned for 1993 W. Gray, with construction scheduled to start September 22 and an estimated completion date of November 22, 2026. No opening date has been announced.

On Saturday, October 3, THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC starts at 6:00 p.m. and THE BROOD at 10:15 p.m., with the rest of the center a few doors down.

A neighborhood landmark that changes its calendar this often affects what nearby blocks feel like day to day, from late evenings on West Gray to how busy the center is on weekends. If you're weighing how places like the River Oaks Theatre fit into a move within or into River Oaks, Blake Kunetka can talk through those details in a private consultation.
